The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold a public meeting on February 24 to discuss the planned reconstruction of M-46 (Apple Avenue) in Muskegon. The meeting aims to provide details about the 2026 project, including scheduling and anticipated traffic disruptions. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their comments.
City representatives, local businesses, interested residents, and MDOT staff will be present at the event, scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Muskegon City Hall.
MDOT plans to rebuild over two miles of M-46 from Muskegon Avenue to Home Street. The work will involve asphalt surfacing, lane reconfiguration, storm sewer installation, concrete sidewalks, sanitary sewer updates, and a new water main. Traffic calming measures will include converting four lanes into three and adding a dedicated left-turn lane.
During construction, Root Memorial Park will temporarily close for modifications at the M-46/First Street intersection. The changes aim to add more green space post-construction under Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966.
A website developed by MDOT in collaboration with the City of Muskegon provides further information on the project. Public input is sought regarding recreational impacts during construction and proposed enhancements at Root Memorial Park until March 10.
For those needing assistance for effective participation in the meeting due to mobility or other needs should contact Orlando Curry at least five business days prior.
Comments can be submitted in person, via email or mail to Monica Monsma at MDOT's Environmental Services Section or through an online comment form.
