Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a coalition of 23 attorneys general in filing motions to enforce a court order and for a preliminary injunction against the Trump Administration. The case, NY v. Trump, challenges actions by President Trump, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and federal agencies regarding nearly $3 trillion in federal assistance funding allocated to states.
The coalition seeks to prevent the administration from imposing funding cuts on federal programs, citing significant threats to state-provided services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects. The motion emphasizes that the continued blocking of funds under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) contradicts an existing Temporary Restraining Order (TRO).
Nessel stated, "Even though we successfully secured a temporary restraining order to stop the Trump White House’s unprecedented, reckless, and unlawful attack on vital government services millions of Michiganders rely on, essential programs and grants in the state of Michigan still face illegal disruptions."
Without federal financial assistance, many states could experience immediate cash shortfalls impacting essential services like healthcare and food for children. Following an OMB memo last week, Michigan reported disruptions in funds for Medicaid, Head Start, food assistance, unemployment assistance, infrastructure investment, among others.
Attorney General Nessel is joined by attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Nevada, North Carolina New Jersey New Mexico Oregon Rhode Island Vermont Washington Wisconsin.
The motions aim to ensure swift disbursement of critical funds to support state efforts in maintaining public health safety and well-being.
