Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a consumer alert regarding the proliferation of illegal gaming machines in the state. These devices, often labeled as "skill games," are seen as harmful to consumers, businesses, and the broader Michigan economy.

"The gaming industry is strictly regulated to promote a safe and fair gambling environment," Nessel stated. She emphasized the importance for gamblers to be aware of the risks linked with these illegal machines. Nessel's office collaborates with the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) to dismantle unlawful gambling operations and is committed to protecting Michigan consumers.

Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, highlighted that "illegal gaming remains a serious threat to Michigan residents and their communities." He pointed out that unregulated machines can cause financial harm and other problems while also leading to lost state revenue which impacts funding for schools and communities. The MGCB aims to uphold gaming regulations and ensure the integrity of Michigan's gaming industry by eliminating unauthorized machines.

These illegal devices resemble casino slot machines with multiple wheels and symbols like cherries, sevens, and bars. Despite being marketed as games requiring skill, they depend on preset outcomes or random number generators. Winnings from these games often violate state law by being awarded in cash or gift cards.

Gambling in Michigan is defined by three elements: money or something of value, a prize, and chance. Businesses operating these machines may be breaching the Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA), which allows the Attorney General to seek court intervention against such activities with potential fines up to $25,000 for repeat offenders. Consumers may also pursue legal action for losses incurred at illegal gaming venues.

To protect themselves, individuals are advised not to play suspected illegal machines, verify machine legitimacy through MGCB contact if necessary, and report any illegal activity observed either to MGCB or local law enforcement.

The public can report alleged illegal gambling anonymously via an MGCB tip line at 1-888-314-2682 or file complaints with Attorney General's Consumer Protection Team through provided contact details.
