Northern Michigan University's athletic teams had a busy weekend from January 30 to February 2, competing in various sports with mixed results.

On Thursday, the women's basketball team faced a tough opponent in Grand Valley State, resulting in a 48-74 loss. Abi Fraaza led NMU with 11 points, while Alyssa Nimz contributed defensively with seven rebounds. The Wildcats' record now stands at 13-6 overall and 7-4 in GLIAC play.

In contrast, the men's basketball team ended Grand Valley's four-game winning streak with a convincing 79-52 victory. Dylan Kuehl scored 21 points for NMU, which shot an impressive 48.3% compared to GVSU's 30%.

Friday saw the hockey team lose narrowly to Bowling Green in overtime, finishing at 3-2. Rasmus Larsson and Tanner Latsch both scored for NMU, while Ryan Ouellette made significant contributions with his saves.

Saturday featured several events across different sports. In women's track and field, the distance medley relay team secured first place, and Alayna Vandegriff placed second in the triple jump. Meanwhile, both alpine skiing teams dominated their races at Spirit Mountain.

The men's Nordic ski team saw Kristoffer Karsrud finish first in all laps of the 7.5k classic race on Saturday morning. Henriette Nilssen claimed gold for NMU in the women's event.

Later that day, women's basketball rebounded with an emphatic win over Davenport (80-41), highlighted by Jacy Weisbrod's leading score of 15 points. The men's basketball team also triumphed over Davenport (86-57), marking head coach Matt Majkrzak's milestone of reaching his hundredth win.

The swim and dive teams excelled against UWGB on Saturday as well; Mia Strazny and Becca Burrows won multiple events for the women’s side while Leo Nolles set pool records for men’s swimming.

Hockey concluded their series against Bowling Green on Saturday night with another defeat (5-2). Despite goals from Tanner Latsch and Rasmus Larsson again contributing positively during this matchup along assists provided by teammates Grayden Slipec among others.
