The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team delivered a commanding performance against Lake Superior State University, securing a 75-37 victory. The Wildcats' impressive second quarter, where they shut out the Lakers with a 19-0 score, was part of an extended 30-0 run that spanned across three quarters.
Throughout the game, NMU demonstrated their dominance by maintaining over 50% shooting accuracy, hitting 28 out of 55 attempts. In contrast, the Lakers managed only 14 out of 54 shots. The Wildcats also excelled in rebounding, achieving a significant advantage with a 46-26 margin.
Ten players from NMU contributed to the scoring effort. Freshman Sydney Whitehouse led off the bench with a career-high of 16 points. Alyssa Hill closely followed with 15 points. Both Whitehouse and Hill shot at an impressive rate of over 77%. Sarah Newcomer added twelve points to the tally while Abi Fraaza and Alyssa Nimz were pivotal on defense.
The first quarter saw back-and-forth runs between both teams until NMU initiated their decisive scoring streak towards its end. By halftime, NMU held a strong lead at 33-15 after completely blanking LSSU in the second quarter.
The third quarter continued in favor of NMU as Mackenzie Holzwart's two three-pointers helped extend their lead further before LSSU broke their long scoreless stretch with a free throw. The final quarter saw NMU widen their lead further to secure their victory comfortably.
This win follows another significant triumph for Northern Michigan against Ferris State earlier in the week. With this result, Northern Michigan improves its record to an overall standing of 13 wins and five losses and seven wins against three losses within GLIAC play.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats are set to return home for upcoming games starting with facing No.1 Grand Valley State on January 30th.
