A federal judge has temporarily blocked an executive order from President Donald Trump that sought to limit birthright citizenship. Judge Coughenour of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington issued a temporary restraining order against the measure, describing it as "a blatantly unconstitutional order."

The decision affects the entire nation and comes amid a related case filed by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and 17 other states, along with Washington D.C. and San Francisco. This case is currently pending before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

In response to Judge Coughenour's ruling, Attorney General Nessel expressed relief over what she described as "a quick and decisive early victory" in challenging the executive order. She stated, “This illegal and un-American attempt to undermine constitutional rights is a direct assault on our democratic values." Nessel affirmed her commitment to defending the rights of Michigan residents.

The restraining order will remain in effect until a preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for February 6th, 2025.
