The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team achieved notable success at the Alma College Open on Sunday, securing four first-place finishes and four runner-up positions.
In the 117 weight class, Yu Sakamoto and Sara Schroder both advanced to the championship match after recording a series of technical fall wins in earlier rounds. Sakamoto emerged victorious over Schroder in their final matchup.
Alissa Caltagirone dominated the 145 weight class with victories including technical falls and a win by fall in the semifinal, culminating in another tech fall victory in the championship.
Clarissa Wangen secured a win at 180, showcasing versatility with wins by tech fall, a fall within one minute, and by decision.
At 207, Kailyn Garrett took first place while Ozioma Ogu finished second and Teni Ajayi came fourth. Garrett's performance included two falls under two minutes followed by technical fall victories. Ogu won her matches through one fall and one tech fall. Ajayi recorded two decision wins.
Zhivanna Magdaleno was runner-up in the 124 weight class after progressing to the final with two tech falls but ultimately losing by fall at the end of round one.
Mickaela Keane also earned a second-place finish at 180 with three wins across different methods: tech fall, decision, and a pinfall at just over two minutes into her match.
Sophia Bassino claimed third place at 160 with victories via tech falls and an injury default. Ruby Joseph contributed to NMU’s achievements with a quarterfinal win by pinfall at 1:15 in her category.

Looking ahead, Northern Michigan will take a break before hosting UW-Oshkosh for duals on February 2nd at Vandament Arena.
