The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team faced a challenging game against Saginaw Valley State University, resulting in a 67-51 loss on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats initially took the lead with a score of 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. However, Saginaw Valley's strong performance in the second quarter, scoring 29 points including seven three-pointers, shifted the momentum in their favor.

Throughout the game, Northern Michigan struggled to maintain its offensive efficiency. The Wildcats shot 36.4% from the field compared to Saginaw Valley's 38.6%. A significant difference was seen in three-point shooting; while NMU managed only 22.7%, SVSU scored at an impressive rate of 44%, just one short of their season-high.

Saginaw Valley capitalized on turnovers as well, forcing Northern into 16 turnovers compared to their own 12. Megan McCalla was a standout player for SVSU with a game-high of 25 points and teammate Aleshia Jones contributed significantly by hitting all three of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Northern's Sarah Newcomer opened up the scoring with a triple after both teams were scoreless for two minutes at the start. Despite this early success, NMU faced challenges due to defensive pressure from Saginaw Valley which led to four turnovers and two shot-clock violations within five minutes.

In the second quarter, Saginaw continued its aggressive offense with three consecutive triples that reclaimed their lead quickly. Although Kayla Tierney and other Wildcats attempted to counteract with baskets of their own, Saginaw outscored NMU by a wide margin in this period.

The third quarter saw both teams struggle offensively initially until SVSU broke through with another layup and triple combination extending their lead further. By then, Northern could not find much success from the field contributing only minimal points throughout this stretch.

Entering into fourth-quarter play trailing behind significantly didn’t allow NMU much room for recovery despite efforts like Sydney Whitehouse’s back-to-back layups reducing some deficit momentarily but not enough overall impact on final outcome handed them fifth defeat season thus far according upcoming matchup Ferris State scheduled January next week potentially opportunity bounce back improve
