As the Los Angeles wildfires continue to impact many lives, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has re-issued a consumer alert on Disaster Relief and Charity Scams. The aim is to protect consumers from fraudulent schemes targeting their goodwill.
“It’s commendable that many in our community want to donate to the thousands affected by the devastating wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area,” Nessel stated. “However, it’s important to make sure your donations reach those in need and don’t end up in the hands of scammers. Before donating, take the time to research and verify that you are giving to legitimate charities.”
Nessel offers several tips for residents who wish to contribute wisely:
- Be cautious of messages from unknown organizations and choose well-known entities for disaster relief.
- Avoid social media ads soliciting funds for victims; instead, use the charity's official website.
- Verify if a charity is registered to solicit funds in Michigan.
- Resist pressure tactics as genuine charities allow you time to decide.
- Be skeptical if contacted by charities claiming past donations, especially if not remembered.
- Steer clear of charities requesting non-traditional payment methods like wire transfers or gift cards.
- Support trusted organizations even without receiving new solicitations.
