The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) continues to provide free contraception resources across more than 300 locations in the state through the Take Control of Your Birth Control program. This initiative aims to support reproductive health by offering over-the-counter oral birth control pills, emergency contraception, condoms, and family planning educational materials.

Since its expansion in October, the program has distributed 34,300 doses each of emergency contraceptive and oral birth control pills, along with 171,500 condoms. A second shipment is being prepared to reach an additional 25,000 individuals.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of access to affordable reproductive health care: “Every Michigander deserves access to affordable birth control, contraception and other reproductive health care,” she stated. She affirmed the state's commitment to providing these critical resources for free at numerous locations statewide.

Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive, expressed pride in assisting Michigan families: “This campaign reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equitable access to reproductive health services.” She encouraged residents to plan their family planning needs using the available resources.

The program's participating locations span every county and include community partners such as local health departments and federally qualified health centers. Resources are accessible regardless of insurance status.

Dr. Patricia Wells from the Corner Health Center highlighted the significance of reliable contraception access: “In 2025, it is unimaginable that access to reliable contraception is still problematic for many." She praised the program for empowering young people with necessary resources.

In addition to free supplies, the initiative provides guidance on obtaining these supplies through insurance or applying for Medicaid coverage via Plan First!, a limited Medicaid benefit launched in 2023 for those who do not qualify for traditional Medicaid.

For more information about Plan First! or assistance with applications, residents can visit Michigan.gov/mibridges or contact local MDHHS offices.
