Yesterday, Huazi Piao, a 60-year-old Chinese national, was ordered to stand trial in the 3rd Circuit Court in Wayne County on charges related to human trafficking. The charges involve commercial sex operations at illicit massage parlors in Wayne County. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Piao's trial following his arrest last month.
Piao faces several serious charges: conducting a criminal enterprise, conspiracy to commit a criminal enterprise, accepting earnings from prostitution—each carrying a potential 20-year sentence—money laundering with a possible 10-year sentence, and two counts of keeping a house of prostitution, each with up to five years.
The investigation into the alleged international human trafficking ring began last summer. It involved multiple law enforcement agencies including Homeland Security Investigations, the Michigan State Police, and the St. Clair Shores Police Department.
Attorney General Nessel stated, “Far too many in our communities fall victim to human trafficking and endure trauma that leaves lasting scars.” She expressed gratitude towards prosecutors and law enforcement partners for their efforts which led to liberating several women from these conditions. Nessel anticipates Piao’s trial for her alleged crimes.
Piao's next court appearance is scheduled for January 13, 2025.
