NMU athletes excel in Nordic skiing and basketball competitions

Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletes participated in several events over the weekend, with notable performances across various sports.

On Thursday, January 2, at the US XC National Championship, NMU's men's Nordic skiers competed in the 10k Individual Start. Luke Fricker finished second among conference skiers and 21st among U23 racers. Adrik Kraftson was third among conference skiers and 24th among U23 racers. In the women's category, Henriette Nilssen secured first place among conference skiers and ranked 19th among U23 racers. Victoria Dybwad came second among conference skiers and 22nd among U23 skiers.

The NMU women's basketball team achieved a 47-40 victory against Davenport on Thursday. The team forced a season-high of 22 turnovers and held their opponents to just 40 points. Mackenzie Holzwart recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Sarah Newcomer also scored 12 points. Alyssa Nimz tied her career-high with 11 rebounds.

In men's basketball, NMU overcame a significant deficit to secure a 60-52 win over Davenport. Despite being down by 17 points in the first half, they executed a remarkable comeback with a 16-0 run. Coach Matt Majkrzak now holds a record of six wins without losses in games played after the new year began. Dylan Kuehl contributed significantly with 19 points and eight rebounds.

On Saturday, January 4, during the US XC Ski National Championship's 1.4k Sprint event, Kristoffer Karsrud reached the semi-finals and placed tenth overall, finishing first among conference skiers for men. Luke Fricker followed as second among conference skiers. For women, Jordan Parent was second among conference skiers and placed 32nd overall.

The women's basketball team faced their first conference loss of the season against GVSU with an outcome of 81-71 on Saturday. Alyssa Nimz scored 17 points while Sydney Whitehouse had her career-first double-digit point performance with eleven points.

Conversely, NMU's men's basketball team triumphed over GVSU with a score of 78-70 on Saturday night marking their seventh consecutive win this season along with achieving a season-high of twelve three-pointers made during the game itself led by Dylan Kuehl who scored twenty-one points including four three-pointers out from six attempts altogether whereas Sam Privet added seventeen more alongside leading them further ahead via grabbing eight rebounds respectively
