NMU women's swim team trails GVSU after first day at Calvin Invite

The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's swim and dive team concluded the first day of the Calvin College Invite in second place among five teams. The team accumulated 517 points, just behind Grand Valley's 528 points and ahead of Findlay, which earned 487 points.

The Wildcats secured podium finishes in three events and achieved NCAA Division II-B Qualifying Standards in six different events. Annika Geyer and Anika Wright both made NCAA cuts by finishing second and third, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. Carlotta Santi and Elena Curti also met NCAA standards in the same event, finishing fifth and ninth.

Preliminary results are available online, with finals scheduled for tomorrow at 6 p.m. following prelims at 10 a.m., all taking place in Grand Rapids.

In the finals of the 200-yard free relay, NMU's A team finished fourth with a time of 1:34.05. The team members were Mia Strazny, Elena Curti, Abigail Keen, and Becca Burrows. The B team placed seventh with a time of 1:36.75.

For individual performances in the 500-yard freestyle final, Annika Geyer clocked a time of 4:55.86 to secure second place while Anika Wright finished third with a time of 4:59.85.

In other events, Evie DeCarlo took fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.04. In the same event, Zoe DeKievit came sixth at 2:07.07.

Becca Burrows achieved an NCAA D2-B qualifying time by finishing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.39 seconds.

In relay events, NMU's A team finished third in the 400-yard medley relay with an NCAA D2-B qualifying time of 3:44.54.

The Wildcats will continue their efforts on day two as they aim to close the gap on Grand Valley State University.
