NMU athletics recap: Volleyball triumphs; women's basketball remains undefeated

Northern Michigan University (NMU) Athletics had a busy weekend with multiple teams competing in various sports from November 20 to November 24.

On Wednesday, the NMU volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory over Parkside in the GLIAC Quarterfinals. Jacqueline Smith achieved 20 kills, marking the seventh time this season she reached that milestone. Meghan Meyer contributed with 15 kills and a .536 hitting percentage.

Thursday saw three NMU football players named to the All-GLIAC Second Team: Freshman running back Jahi Wood, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Daniel Babcock, and sophomore linebacker Jax Hertel.

The volleyball team continued its success on Friday with four players receiving All-GLIAC honors. Jacqueline Smith earned her fifth consecutive All-GLIAC First Team honor, while Meghan Meyer was recognized for the fifth consecutive time as well, making the second team. Allie Barlow received second-team honors, and Liesl Haugen received an honorable mention. In women's soccer, NMU faced a 4-1 defeat against Drury in the NCAA Tournament First Round. Molly Pistorius scored one goal for NMU. In men's basketball, NMU lost to Minnesota-State Moorhead with a score of 71-82; Julien Smith and Dylan Kuehl each scored 16 points.

Saturday featured a close win for women's basketball as they defeated UMD 65-63. Alyssa Nimz led with a career-high of 17 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Hill added another 13 points and nine rebounds. The volleyball team experienced a narrow loss in the GLIAC Semifinals against GVSU after leading late in the fifth set but ultimately losing it by five of the final six points scored by GVSU. Jacqueline Smith recorded another impressive performance with 20 kills and 16 digs, while Meghan Meyer had 15 kills at a .500 hitting percentage. Men's basketball suffered another loss to Minnesota Duluth at 67-79 despite Julien Smith's season-high of 27 points.

On Sunday, women's basketball improved their record to 6-0 following their victory over St. Cloud State at 63-52. Sarah Newcomer played a pivotal role with three consecutive triples during the second half contributing to her season-high of game-high total of 22 points which propelled NMU into winning position alongside contributions from Alyssa Nimz scoring sixteen points along with nine rebounds and Jacy Weisbrod adding twelve more points off four successful three-point shots.
