Jihaad Ahmad, a 36-year-old inmate in the Michigan Department of Corrections, was arraigned on Monday at Lansing's 54-A District Court. He faces one count of False Report or Threat of Terrorism. The charge follows an alleged threat against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

According to the State, Ahmad reportedly sent a threatening letter to Governor Whitmer's office in May 2024 after being denied parole. The letter allegedly contained threats against the Governor's life and included intentions to bomb her residence upon his release from prison. The Michigan State Police received the letter for investigation.

"Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats to not only them but our democracy as a whole," stated Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. "My department is committed to prosecuting this offense to the fullest extent of the law."

If convicted, Ahmad could face up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $20,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 14, 2024, before Judge Cynthia Ward at the same district court.

It is important to note that criminal charges are merely allegations at this stage. The defendant remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Additionally, booking photos are not provided by the Department.
