A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Michigan Bureau of Elections on November 4, 2024. The request was made by Great Lakes Wire, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the request, we asked for access to the voter file as of November 4, 2024, which is the day before the election day. This information is being sought under the provisions of the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq., and we have expressed a preference for receiving it in an electronic format.
As a media organization, Great Lakes Wire plays a crucial role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records such as these is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information, we believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We are awaiting response from the Michigan Bureau of Elections regarding this matter.
