The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team is set to commence its 2024-25 season at the Simpson College Luther Hill Invitational in Indianola, Iowa. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2, starting at 10 a.m.

In preparation for the regular season, Northern Michigan held a Green and Gold Intrasquad event last weekend at the Superior Dome, featuring a dozen duals.

Fans can follow updates from the event by checking @nmu_wrestling on Instagram. Details about live results are yet to be determined.

Yu Sakamoto stands out as a key athlete for Northern Michigan. She is ranked fourth nationally in pound-for-pound rankings and first in the 117 weight class by The Open Mat. Sakamoto recently achieved world champion status at the U23 World Championships in Albania.

Other notable wrestlers include Alissa Caltagirone, ranked 11th at 145, and Zhivanna Magdaleno, who ranks 13th in the 124 weight class. Both athletes competed at Nationals last season.

As a team, Northern Michigan holds the tenth position in tournament rankings and eighteenth in team dual rankings. Entering its fourth season as a program, NMU boasts ten regional top-5 finishes, with Diana Dzasezava securing a win in 2023. Over its three-year history, the program has produced two All-Americans and twelve Scholar All-Americans.

Tony DeAnda was recognized as Regional Coach of the Year in 2023.
