NMU swim team breaks records; earns NCAA B cuts

The NMU men's swim and dive team wrapped up their weekend competition with a mixed result, securing a victory against Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) but falling short against Grand Valley State University (GVSU). The meet featured several record-breaking performances and NCAA Division II B cuts.

The Wildcats triumphed over SVSU with a score of 164.50-130.50 but were defeated by GVSU, who scored 202 points to NMU's 94. GVSU also won against SVSU with a score of 202-96.

In the opening event, the NMU 200-yard medley relay team, comprising Ian Rocheleau, Wyatt Dickman, William LaCount, and Martin Wolmarans, set a new pool record with a time of 1:30.37. This performance surpassed the previous record by 1.46 seconds and edged out GVSU's relay team by .62 seconds.

Wyatt Dickman delivered notable performances by setting pool records in both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke events. In the former, he earned an NCAA DII B cut with a time of 55.06, breaking Roberto Camera's 2016 record of 56.23 seconds but finished second to Andrew Goh from GVSU who clocked in at 54.76 seconds for the pool record. Similarly, in the latter event, Dickman's time of 2:01.93 set another pool record but was surpassed by Goh's time of 2:01.14.

In the concluding event, the NMU team consisting of Dickman, Alessandro Rosatelli, William LaCount, and Gabriel Fulconi broke another pool record in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:01.62; however, GVSU set the official record at 2:59.72.

Rosatelli and Fulconi both achieved NCAA B cuts in the 200-yard freestyle event while LaCount earned a provisional mark in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Wildcats will next compete on November 9th against Wayne State and Findlay from Detroit.
