Northern Michigan prepares for Spartan Invite track and field competition

The Northern Michigan Track and Field team is preparing for its second outdoor meet of the season, scheduled for Friday, April 5th. The team will travel to East Lansing to compete in the Spartan Invite hosted by Michigan State University.

Field events are set to begin with the hammer throw at 10 a.m., followed by track events starting with the 3000m steeplechase at 10:30 a.m. The meet will wrap up with the 4x400m relay in the early evening.

Last weekend, NMU kicked off its outdoor season at the Redbird Challenge in Normal, Illinois. Ahna Larson achieved victory in the 400m hurdles, marking her second career win in this event with a time of 1:05.09. Teammate Natalie Pisoke secured second place with a time of 1:05.62. Baux Truckey also earned a runner-up finish in the 400m, clocking in at 56.92 seconds.

The team recorded two third-place finishes; Madi Szymanski completed the 1500m race in 4:34.64 while Emma Sweeney finished the 3000m steeplechase in 12:08.76. Overall, Northern Michigan accumulated 84 points to secure third place among twelve teams competing. Illinois State claimed first place with a total of 216 points, followed by Western Illinois with 145 points.

Reflecting on last year's outdoor season, NMU finished fourth at the GLIAC Championships. The Wildcats' roster includes returning athletes who contributed to setting four school records last year and new talent joining this season's squad.
