NMU women's soccer welcomes nine freshmen recruits for 2024 season

The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's soccer team has announced its incoming freshman class for 2024, consisting of nine students from four different states. The new recruits are expected to bring a wealth of talent and leadership to the team, which is the reigning GLIAC post-season and regular season champion.

Head coach Jon Sandoval expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, stating, "There is a lot of excitement surrounding this recruiting class. This group will push boundaries, create lasting bonds, and strive for excellence both on and off the field."

The incoming players have achieved notable accolades in their high school careers. They include all-region selections, all-district selections, national champions, state champions, and team captains.

Coach Sandoval emphasized the importance of each player's unique skills contributing to the team's overall strength. He said, "We believe that every player brings unique skills and experiences that contribute to our collective strength, and we are eager to welcome these passionate athletes into our program."

The new players include Lucy Burk from Naperville, Illinois; Alyse Daavettila from Fenton, Michigan; Emma Kastamo from Hartland High School in Michigan; Irene Kiilunen from Brighton High School in Michigan; Marena Maceroni from Macomb High School in Michigan; Kira Merrell from College Station in Texas; Sally Patton from Columbus in Ohio; Carly Sides from Libertyville in Illinois; and Katie Swirczek also from Hartland High School in Michigan.

These athletes come with impressive records such as state championships, captaincy roles on their respective teams, and recognition at various levels including all-state selections.

The Wildcats will kick off their 2024 season with an exhibition match against Lewis at home on August 24 at 1 PM. More details about their schedule can be found through official channels.
