Northern Michigan University's Nordic ski team heads to NCAA Championships

The Northern Michigan University Men's Nordic Ski teams are set to compete in the NCAA Skiing Championships this week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The event will take place on Thursday, March 7, and Saturday, March 9.

The NCAA Men's and Women's Skiing Committee has selected Wildcats Henriette Nilssen, Victoria Dybwad, and Merle Richter to participate in the competition. The championships will feature a 7.5km Individual Freestyle race on Thursday and a 20km Mass Start Classical race on Saturday. These events will be held at Howelsen Hills and can be watched live on NCAA.com.

Recently, the team competed at the Tech Trails in Houghton during the NCAA Central Regional Skiing Championships on February 24 and 25. Henriette Nilssen and Merle Richter led their team with podium finishes, securing second and third places respectively. Nilssen completed her race with a time of 18:46.3 while Richter finished close behind at 18:55.8.

On the second day of competition, due to insufficient snow, the planned 20km Mass Start was changed to an Interval Start. Despite this change, Richter and Nilssen excelled again by claiming the top two spots on the podium with times of 1:01:21.8 for Richter and 1:02:37.5 for Nilssen.

The team secured second place overall on day one with a total of 52 points before achieving first place on day two with a score of 54 points.
