Northern Michigan University skiers head to Houghton for regional championships

The Northern Michigan University Men's Nordic Ski teams are set to compete at the NCAA Central Regional Skiing Championships this weekend in Houghton. The events will take place at the Tech Trails on February 24 and 25, featuring a 7.5km Skate Interval Start on Saturday and a 20km Classic Mass Start on Sunday.

The regional qualifiers for the 2024 NC skiing championships begin from February 22 to February 25. The selections for participants from the Central, East, and West regions will be announced on February 27 at 1 p.m. ET via a press release on NCAA.com.

The NCAA championships are scheduled to start on March 6 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with events continuing through March 9. The Nordic events will occur at Howelsen Hills, and all four days' competitions will be available for live streaming on NCAA.com.

In last year's regionals, Kristoffer Karsrud secured third place in the 20km Classic event. Cooper Lennox finished fourth, while Luke Fricker and Jonathan Clarke placed sixth and seventh respectively. Karsrud was honored with All-CCSA First Team and All-Region First Team accolades for his performance in the 20K Classic Mass Start. Adrik Kraftson received All-CCSA Second Team recognition. Lennox earned an All-Region First Team selection for the same event as well as an All-Region Second Team selection in the 10k Freestyle category. Fricker and Clarke both achieved All-Region Second Team status in the 20K Classic Mass Start.

Recently, at the CCSA Conference Championships held on February 10 and 11, Luke Fricker won gold in the 7.5km Freestyle and silver in the 20km Classic event. Kristoffer Karsrud also made it to the podium with gold and bronze medals during these competitions. Other notable performances included Mathias Haugen's second-place finish in the 7.5km race and Jonathan Clarke's fourth-place result in the 20km event.
