The Northern Michigan football team suffered a heavy defeat against Grand Valley State University (GVSU), losing 73-14 at the Superior Dome on Saturday, October 21. Despite efforts from players like Charlie Gerhard and Brock Franklin, who each scored touchdowns for Northern Michigan, the team could not match GVSU's performance.
Grand Valley State amassed a total of 609 yards compared to Northern Michigan's 279. Mitch Larkin led the conference in tackles with 13 during the game, while Ricky Lancaster made an interception for Northern Michigan. The loss leaves the Wildcats winless this season with a record of 0-8, whereas GVSU improved to 6-1.
The game began with GVSU quickly scoring on their opening drive with a Tariq Reid touchdown after just five plays. Reid was instrumental in setting up another touchdown soon after with a significant run. Cody Tierney also contributed to the early lead with his own touchdown run.
Northern Michigan had opportunities but struggled to capitalize on them, facing challenges such as a questionable pass interference call that halted one promising drive. By halftime, GVSU had extended their lead to 31-0.
In the second half, GVSU continued to dominate, adding more points through connections between Cade Peterson and Tierney and capitalizing on NMU errors. Despite these setbacks, Aidan Hoard managed to connect with Charlie Gerhard for a long touchdown play—the longest reception of Gerhard's career.
GVSU added further scores from Derrick Woods and Kellen Reed along with an interception return by Tommy Barnett. In the final moments of the game, Brock Franklin scored for Northern Michigan, concluding the game at 73-14.
Northern Michigan will look to regroup as they prepare to face Wayne State next weekend at home in the Superior Dome on Saturday, October 28.
