The NMU women's soccer team experienced a rare defeat on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Davenport in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This marks only the third time this season that the Wildcats have been held scoreless.
Davenport's victory ended the Wildcats' unbeaten streak at seven games. The Panthers had not defeated NMU since October 20, 2019, when they secured a 3-2 win.
Haley Diekevers, Davenport's leading scorer, netted the sole goal of the match just six minutes after kickoff. Despite outshooting their opponents 14-2 and preventing any shot attempts from Davenport in the second half, NMU was unable to equalize.
Justina L'Esperance led NMU with six shots, three of which were on target. Sally Patton recorded one save during the match. Alongside Patton, Maria Storm, Hannah Kastamo, Kenna Alexander, and Angelina Perritano played the entire game.
Following this loss, NMU holds an overall record of 8-3-2 and a conference record of 6-2-1 with 19 points. They now trail first-place Grand Valley State by one point in conference standings.
The Wildcats will return home for three consecutive matches beginning with Roosevelt on Friday, October 25th at 3 PM.
In their upcoming schedule, NMU will conclude their regular season with three road games starting against Roosevelt next weekend on Sunday, October 27th at 1 p.m. in Chicago, Illinois.
