Northern Michigan University has announced the promotion of Ben Johnson to head coach of the men's and women's golf teams. The announcement was made by NMU athletic director Rick Comley.

Johnson, who joined the program in August 2023 as an assistant coach, primarily worked with the women's team last year. "We are very excited to announce Ben as our new head golf coach," said Comley. "He has great experience as an assistant and running the NMU golf course. He has a great relationship with the student-athletes and I am confident that he will lead us to an outstanding golf season."

Under Johnson's guidance, the 2023 season was notable for the NMU women's program. The team secured its fifth tournament win in program history, achieved two second-place finishes, and saw individual success with Maya Hunter placing in the top-20 at the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Hunter, Alyssa Yaggie, and Russel Sprecher earned All-GLIAC accolades in 2023.

"Getting to be named the head coach is a great honor," Johnson stated. "We have two very good teams and great young talent. I'd like to thank athletic director Rick Comley for this opportunity and I'm very excited to take the next steps to bring this program in the right direction."

A graduate of Northern Michigan University and a four-year member of its golf team, Johnson also serves as general manager for the NMU golf course. His coaching experience includes roles at Marquette Senior High School's varsity golf team and various positions within Marquette Junior Hockey programs.
