Russel Sprecher qualifies for 103rd Michigan Golf Association Amateur Championship

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Russel Sprecher of the NMU men's golf team has qualified for the 103rd Michigan Golf Association Amateur Championship, finishing tied for second after shooting even par in his qualifying round at Michaywe Pines Golf Club in Gaylord, Michigan.

The GAM took eight qualifiers and two alternates out of 47 golfers. Russel recorded four birdies and ten pars en route to his even-par score of 72.

Russel started his round strong, shooting -2 in his opening seven holes, which included birdies on the 540-yard par-5 second and the 336-yard par-4 sixth. Sprecher was one of only three golfers to birdie the sixth hole and one of eight to birdie the second.

After bogeys on holes eight and ten, Russel made four pars and a birdie in his next five holes, birdieing the 557-yard par-5 14th. A bogey, birdie, bogey finish saw Sprecher turn in a 37 (+1) on the back nine to go with his 35 (-1) on the front nine. Sprecher was one of eight golfers to birdie the 14th hole and one of seven golfers to birdie the 534-yard par-5 17th.

Russel will head to Ann Arbor and compete in three rounds from August 5-6, 2024.
