The Michigan State Police (MSP) has concluded its investigation into the death of Mr. Samuel Sterling on April 17, 2024. The investigative report and all gathered evidence have been handed over to the Michigan Department of Attorney General for further review and potential criminal charges.

In a move towards transparency, the MSP has released video footage from the incident. This footage is a representative sample compiled from three police agencies: the MSP, Grand Rapids Police Department, and Wyoming Police Department. It includes three body-worn camera videos and one in-car camera video. Due to the number of officers present at the scene, there are multiple versions of these videos; however, those released are deemed most relevant and comprehensive. Certain redactions have been made to protect the identities of undercover officers and uninvolved individuals.

It is noteworthy that the MSP member who was driving the vehicle that struck Mr. Sterling was not wearing a body-worn camera due to his assignment on a federal task force. Furthermore, his unmarked vehicle was not equipped with an in-car camera.

Before making this footage public, MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II met privately with the Sterling and Cage families to allow them to view it first.

“As Director of the Michigan State Police, I assure the Sterling and Cage families and the communities we serve that we will continue to be transparent in this investigation," Colonel Grady stated. He also pledged full cooperation with the Michigan Department of Attorney General throughout their review process.

The officer involved in striking Mr. Sterling remains suspended pending further review by the Michigan Department of Attorney General as well as any subsequent criminal proceedings or internal investigations. According to regulations set by The Michigan State Police Troopers Association contract, an officer's name or personnel file can only be released if they are charged with a crime.

As this case is currently under review by the Michigan Department of Attorney General, no additional information will be released at this time.
