Today, April 12, 2022, at approximately 1:30 pm, a small area of the Grand Rapids Water System experienced a reduction in water pressure due to a malfunctioning valve near 28th Street and Birchcrest SE. Grand Rapids City staff was on scene immediately and resolved the issue by 2:40 pm.
As a result of this valve issue, approximately 750 customers were impacted by this reduction of water pressure in an area bounded along 28th Street on the north, Vineland Avenue on the west, Breton Avenue on the east and along 32nd Street on the south (please reference the attached map for the limits). Due to this reduction in pressure, bacterial contamination may have occurred in this area of the water system. As a precaution, a boil water advisory has been issued to the affected customers within this area described above. Please see the attached advisory and map.
As noted, normal pressures were restored to this area around 2:40 pm today. City staff are currently flushing the watermains in the area impacted and collecting water samples for testing. This will occur again on Wednesday and the boil water advisory will remain in effect until testing is complete and the results indicate the water is safe to drink.
