City seeks volunteers to serve as board members or commissioners

City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Feb 15.

“…Government of the people, by the people, for the people…” — a sentiment of President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 – still drives Grand Rapids’ municipal government today.

Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and City Commissioners are encouraging residents to consider applying to serve on one of the City of Grand Rapids’ 42 boards and commissions.

“We are looking for individuals who love this city, have a passion for community service and who want to get more involved in City government,” Mayor Bliss said.  “People who serve on our boards and commissions support City operations, review City initiatives, make development recommendations, protect our water, improve our neighborhoods and help shape the future of Grand Rapids.”

The City Commission and its Committee of Appointments appoints residents to boards and commissions to ensure representation from all three city wards and to represent the overall diverse composition of the community. Although the requirement for appointment to each of the different boards and commissions can vary, all appointments begin completing the application process. Residents are welcome to select a board or commission of interest and apply – even if they have never participated in City government. Several have immediate vacancies.

Grand Rapids Second Ward Commissioner Milinda Ysasi, who serves as chair of the Committee of Appointments, says the City is indebted to those who serve.

“Grand Rapids would not be able to provide the high level of service it does without those who give their valuable time and diverse talents to serving on our boards and commissions,” Ysasi said. “Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and improve local government by lending your voice and making a difference.”

Those who need additional support or have questions about the application process can call the City Clerk's Office at 616-456-3010.
