Strong singles play helped the Michigan State women’s tennis team notch their first match win of the season Jan. 30 against DePaul.
The Spartans beat the visiting Blue Demons 5-2, the university reported. MSU won five of the six singles matches.
"Just to get your first win of the season, it gets the monkey off your back a little bit," head coach Kim Bruno said in the report. "DePaul always produces a good team that competes really hard, and it was just good for us to find a way to win. That's what champions do."
The Spartans relied on five singles victories to overcome dropping the doubles point. That took MSU to a 1-1 record, while DePaul fell to 1-3.
The strong singles play included a comeback by Lauren LeMonds, stats indicate. Eleanor Nobbs came out strong, winning the first set 6-0. LeMonds answered with 6-4 and 7-5 wins to take the match.
Another match went three sets, too. Charlotte Gisclon opened up with a 6-3 first set against Valentina Martin. Martin returned the favor in the second set, and Gisclon closed out the win with another 6-3 set.
