Aric Nesbitt, a state senator from Michigan, has expressed concern over the state’s significant job losses due to offshoring and supports initiatives aimed at revitalizing American manufacturing. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

“Michigan has suffered more than any other state when it comes to losing jobs overseas,” said Aric Young Nesbitt, State Senator for Michigan. “President Trump is working to stop the bleeding and standing up for the workers of this state that have been sold out by unfair trade. Every American should support this.”

Since the 1990s, Michigan has faced substantial manufacturing job losses attributed to offshoring, particularly after the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements. According to Public Citizen, the state has lost over 231,000 manufacturing jobs—almost one-third of its industrial workforce—since 1994. These losses have been primarily due to companies relocating operations to countries with lower labor costs, resulting in enduring economic impacts on Michigan’s industrial communities.

Between December 1999 and January 2025, Michigan’s manufacturing employment decreased from 881,900 to 594,600 jobs—a net loss of 287,300 positions. As reported by Michigan Capitol Confidential, this decline highlights the combined effects of global trade dynamics, automation advancements, and industrial restructuring efforts despite state investments in job retention and development programs.

A study conducted by the Economic Policy Institute in 2019 found that Michigan lost 174,700 manufacturing jobs between 2001 and 2017 due to trade with China. This places Michigan among the top states affected by offshoring. According to Policy Matters Ohio, these job losses were concentrated in high-value sectors such as automotive and electronics industries, intensifying calls for reforms in trade policy and domestic job support initiatives.

Senator Nesbitt represents Michigan’s 20th District as a Republican and has served in the state legislature since 2011. He currently leads the Senate Republican caucus. His official biography states that Nesbitt focuses on pro-growth economic policies, energy development initiatives, and reducing regulatory burdens. He has advocated for legislation aimed at enhancing Michigan’s competitiveness amid industrial job losses.
