The Detroit Red Wings will play the Tampa Bay Lightning at Benchmark International Arena on April 14 in their penultimate game of the 2025-26 National Hockey League season. Head coach Todd McLellan said the team is seeking a strong finish after being eliminated from playoff contention.
The Red Wings, who represent Detroit, Michigan, and host games in downtown Detroit according to the official website, are concluding their season with two road games in Florida. McLellan said, “We’re going to play against two real good teams in three nights on the road. We’re looking for a real honest effort from the players. Nobody feels good right now, but maybe we can change that a little bit by playing real well, competing real hard and going into the summer with a couple of wins.”
Detroit has faced Tampa Bay three times this season and holds a record of one win and two losses against them. Axel Sandin-Pellikka said, “The season isn’t over. There are still two games to play, which we want to win so we can come back with a good feeling next year.” The Red Wings were officially eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention following a loss to the New Jersey Devils at Little Caesars Arena.
McLellan confirmed that Michael Brandsegg-Nygård will return to play against Tampa Bay after recovering from an injury sustained during their last visit there. “Last time we were in Tampa, he was with us,” McLellan said about Brandsegg-Nygård’s return. “That’s where he got hurt and it took him out of the lineup for quite a long time. Now, he’s healthy…I want to see him play free, like he did at the beginning of the year.” Brandsegg-Nygård commented on his opportunity: “It’s really important…If I do a good job here, I will get a better chance to play here next year. I’m excited to play.”
Tampa Bay has already secured its place in this year’s playoffs and features standout performances by Nikita Kucherov and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.
The Red Wings operate as one of the Original Six teams in the National Hockey League according to their official website and have won 11 Stanley Cup championships throughout their history as reported by their official site (source). The franchise upholds what it describes as “a legacy of excellence” as one of America’s top-performing hockey clubs (official website).
Sandin-Pellikka summed up Detroit’s mindset heading into these final contests: “We know who we’re going up against. They have some really good players that score a lot, so we’ll have to play a steady game.”
