Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher of the National Federation of Independent Business recently co-authored an opinion piece in Crain’s Detroit Business with Dominick Pallone, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Health Plans. The article discusses legislative options for making health care more affordable for small businesses in Michigan.

In their op-ed, Fisher and Pallone state, “Unlike other states around the country, Michigan policymakers seem stranded in orbit, unable to do anything but point fingers or blame others for the cost of health care. Other states, like New Mexico, Oregon, Minnesota, New York, Maryland, Colorado, Arkansas, Texas, Wyoming, Connecticut, California and Massachusetts, are increasing state income tax credits for health care expenses, funding reinsurance programs to help lower premiums, or expanding the scope of Association Health Plans (AHPs) and Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements (ICHRAs) for small businesses.”

The authors highlight that while several states have adopted measures such as enhanced tax credits and reinsurance programs to reduce costs and expand options for small business health coverage, Michigan lawmakers have not yet taken similar actions.

The full op-ed can be read on Crain’s Detroit Business.
