Mike Rogers, an Army veteran, businessman, and candidate for U.S. Senate, wrote in an April 15 op-ed in The Midwesterner about the effects of the Working Families Tax Cuts on Michigan families.
Rogers said these tax cuts are providing relief to many people across the state who have struggled with high taxes and rising costs. He said, “The Working Families Tax Cuts are a game-changer for Michigan. For years, Democrats over taxed, overregulated, made life too expensive, and bled working families dry. And each April, couples would sit at the table and worry about how much they would have to pay in taxes. This year, those families are breathing a sigh of relief.”
According to Rogers’ op-ed, average Michigan families could see up to $9,900 more in take-home pay due to these tax cuts and wage increases up to $6,100. He shared stories from workers who saw significant changes this year because of new policies such as no tax on overtime or tips. “Last year,” he said one worker told him after visiting a manufacturing facility in Rochester Hills,”this worker had to pay $500 in for his taxes. This year, he got $3,500 back.” Another example included a bartender who received a $6,500 return due to no tax on tips.
Rogers stated that more than three million workers qualify for no tax on overtime and another 1.7 million seniors benefit from reduced taxes on social security income under this law. He also pointed out that Michigan received $173 million for rural hospitals as part of these measures and nearly 135,000 small businesses benefited from extended deductions.
He criticized Democratic opposition: “But rather than support historic tax cuts that put more money in Michiganders’ pockets every single Democrat opposed it…For 32 years we have had two Democrat Senators thinking the same way…and against the interests of Michigan families.” Rogers concluded by saying he would work to make these tax cuts permanent if elected.
The Rogers for Senate campaign aims to promote economic growth and job creation while reducing costs and protecting benefits for seniors in Michigan according to the official website.
