Michigan State University Extension announced on May 4 that the third annual Field Crops Scouting School will begin on May 21 at the MSU Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center in Frankenmuth, Michigan. The program is designed for interns and entry-level scouts to receive training on field crop scouting, including basic skills and insights from experienced professionals.
The Scouting School aims to provide timely, hands-on education throughout the growing season. Participants will attend three sessions as a cohort: May 21 (8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.), June 18 (12 p.m.–3:30 p.m.), and July 16 (12 p.m.–3:30 p.m.). Topics include weed identification, scouting patterns, nutrient deficiencies, disease scouting with Marty Chilvers, PhD, MSU Extension plant pathologist, and insect scouting with Chris DiFonzo, PhD, MSU Extension field crops entomologist. According to organizers, past participants have expressed strong satisfaction with the program.
The cost for attending is $150 per person. This fee covers snacks each day, lunch on the first day, reference materials and tools for scouting activities. Enrollment is limited to 30 individuals to maintain small group interaction and ensure personalized instruction from educators and specialists.
