Michigan House Republicans have unveiled plans to maintain reciprocating internal combustion engine generators until 2049, reduce green energy mandates, and offer tax incentives for nuclear research. The announcement was made on the social media platform X.

According to Bridge Michigan, these policies are aimed at advancing “affordable and reliable clean energy” in the state. The focus is on supporting energy infrastructure and innovation amid growing concerns over Michigan’s energy grid reliability and costs, especially following recent power outages and extreme weather events. Energy policy has become a significant legislative issue in Michigan, with debates centered on balancing reliability with the transition to clean energy.

A central aspect of the plan is to keep reciprocating internal combustion engine generators operational through their expected lifecycle ending in 2049. This strategy is intended to ensure reliability while facilitating a gradual transition as older generators are phased out according to technological and regulatory advancements. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that Michigan’s electricity generation mix currently relies heavily on natural gas and other traditional sources, highlighting the importance of existing infrastructure in meeting demand.

The proposal also includes rolling back certain green energy mandates, which Republicans argue have increased consumer costs. Additionally, it introduces tax credits and grants to promote research into small modular nuclear reactors and broader innovation. Nuclear energy is viewed as crucial for future baseload electricity needs and emissions reduction. According to the World Nuclear Association, small modular reactors represent an emerging option for states like Michigan seeking new clean energy solutions while maintaining grid reliability.

Michigan House Republicans serve as the Republican caucus in the state’s House of Representatives, advocating for legislative priorities across various areas including economic growth, public safety, and responsible governance.
