Michigan Department of Transportation announces annual awards for achievements in state aviation

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced the winners of its annual awards for outstanding achievements in aviation during the 2026 Michigan Airport Conference, which took place in East Lansing on February 18-19. The awards recognize airports and individuals who have contributed to advancing aviation across the state. Nominations were made by MDOT Office of Aeronautics staff and members of the airport community.

“Congratulations to all the award recipients who make a positive impact on Michigan aviation,” said Bryan Budds, MDOT Office of Aeronautics director. “The hard work and dedication these airports and individuals have made are truly commendable in making airports safe, connecting people, recruiting new talent and growing the economy.”

The list of 2025 award winners includes:

– General Aviation Airport of the Year: Dupont-Lapeer Airport in Lapeer
– Air Carrier Airport of the Year: MBS International Airport in Freeland
– Project of the Year: MBS International Airport Solar Canopy and Charging Network Project
– Aviation Professional of the Year: Keith R. Newell, Wexford County Airport director (Cadillac)
– Aviation Educator of the Year: Stephanie Ward of Mead and Hunt in Lansing
– Consultant of the Year: Mike Borta of Prein and Newhof
– Aviation Student of the Year: Reed Hudson, Western Michigan University

Each year, MDOT recognizes those whose efforts have resulted in significant improvements to airport facilities, operations or public relations supporting aviation throughout Michigan.

MDOT manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways as well as bridges, non-motorized trails, railroad tracks and various airports statewide (official website).
