The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the M-96 (Michigan Avenue) bridge over I-94 in Marshall starting Monday, March 2, 2026. The closure is part of the Marshall Modernization Project and is expected to last until Sunday, August 30, 2026.
During this period, traffic on M-96 will be detoured via Wheatfield Parkway and M-311 (11 Mile Road). The project aims to rebuild the bridge to improve transportation infrastructure in Calhoun County near Battle Creek.
MDOT manages a wide range of transportation assets across Michigan. The department oversees nearly 10,000 miles of state highways and more than 4,800 bridges throughout the state, as well as non-motorized trails, railroad tracks, and airports. More information about MDOT’s responsibilities can be found on its official website.
With over 2,800 employees working across seven regions and multiple service centers statewide, MDOT maintains operations that cover a broad spectrum of transportation needs. The department’s mission is focused on serving people and communities while supporting economic growth through transportation initiatives. Leadership at MDOT includes a director along with chief officers overseeing administration and operations.
MDOT’s work includes maintaining the state highway system—comprising M routes like M-96—as well as interstate and US routes. The agency also handles bridge maintenance, rail services, public transit programs, aviation efforts, non-motorized trails development, and upholding safety standards for Michigan’s transport network.
