The Michigan 4-H Foundation announced on May 6 the appointment of a new trustee, highlighting the continued support for Michigan State University (MSU) Extension 4-H Youth Development. The foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds from individuals and organizations to support youth development activities and volunteer training within the state’s 4-H program.

This announcement matters as it reinforces the partnership between MSU Extension and community leaders dedicated to advancing youth opportunities in agriculture, leadership, and service. The foundation’s work helps sustain educational initiatives that benefit young people across Michigan.

Nugent brings over three decades of leadership experience, financial expertise, and dedication to agriculture and youth development. He currently serves as treasurer, chief financial officer, and human resources director for Michigan Farm Bureau. His career has included roles such as manager of Member Services, director of Information and Public Relations Division, director of Field Operations for sixteen years, and leader of corporate social responsibility efforts focused on childhood hunger eradication in Michigan.

A graduate of MSU with dual bachelor’s degrees in food systems economics/management and agricultural/natural resources communications—and an MBA from Western Michigan University—Nugent remains actively engaged with his alma mater through alumni association leadership roles. As a Kent County 4-H alumnus recognized by induction into the Michigan 4-H Emerald Clover Society in 2018, he continues supporting local programs as founder/co-leader of Milky Way 4-H Club and coach/volunteer for dairy-related teams.

“4-H provided a strong backbone of support for me as a young farm kid growing up in Kent County,” Nugent said. “Through 4-H, I developed friendships and a strong and vibrant network of people I continue to work with today. As my kids grew up, I knew they should have the same experience, so I became a 4-H leader to pay it forward to the next generation. 4-H truly contributed to my success both professionally and personally.”

Trustees manage foundation policies while advocating for ongoing community support; they also oversee staff activities through committee work facilitating operations.
