The Lenawee County Health Department announced on Apr. 29 that it will join with the Lenawee Youth Council to mark World No Tobacco Day by displaying the Clothesline Project at the Human Services Building on Winter Street. The event will feature 129 shirts hung by teens from the Youth Council on May 11, each shirt representing a tobacco-related death in Lenawee County during the previous year. The display is scheduled to remain in place for about two weeks.

World No Tobacco Day, established by the World Health Organization, highlights the dangers of tobacco use and its impact on public health. According to information provided by organizers, tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in Michigan as well as worldwide.

The initiative aims to draw attention to local statistics showing that smoking causes more deaths in Lenawee County than AIDS, alcohol, auto accidents, drugs, opioids, murders, and suicides combined. Organizers say they hope this visual representation will encourage greater community awareness and action against tobacco use.

Community members seeking further details about the Lenawee County Health Department or specifics about the Clothesline Project are encouraged to visit LenaweeHealthDepartment.org or call (517) 264-5226 for more information.

As efforts continue locally and globally to reduce tobacco-related harm, events like these provide opportunities for education and engagement within communities.
