The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that it will begin a $1.5 million improvement project on I-94 Business Loop (Gratiot Road) between Range Road and I-94 BL/M-29 in Marysville starting April 20. The work is scheduled to continue through October and will include concrete patching, joint sealing, and sidewalk improvements.

This project aims to provide a smoother and safer driving surface for motorists traveling through St. Clair County, according to the department’s statement. The construction will be carried out in two stages: first, closing the outside lanes while keeping one lane open in each direction along with the center left-turn lane until early July; then shifting closures to the three inside lanes while opening the outer lanes for traffic.

Based on economic modeling by MDOT, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 13 jobs throughout its duration. “This work will provide drivers with a smoother, safer driving surface,” said the department.

The Michigan Department of Transportation manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, more than 4,800 bridges, over 2,700 miles of non-motorized trails, hundreds of miles of railroad track, and various airports across Michigan according to the official website. The agency employs more than 2,800 people statewide and operates seven regions along with numerous service centers and facilities according to the official website.

MDOT’s mission focuses on serving people and communities by linking them through transportation initiatives according to the official website. Leadership at MDOT includes a director as well as chief administrative officer and chief operations officer positions according to the official website.

The department oversees maintenance for M-, I-, and US-designated routes as well as bridge management, rail services oversight, public transit programs development, aviation operations coordination including airport safety standards enforcement—demonstrating broad responsibility for Michigan’s transportation infrastructure according to the official website.
