The City of Detroit Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management announced on April 20 that it will hold a four-day Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteer training class beginning Thursday, April 23. The sessions will take place at the Detroit Homeland Security and Emergency Management facility located at 13331 Lyndon in Detroit.
The CERT program aims to equip residents with essential skills in disaster preparedness, basic medical care, and other life-saving techniques. This training is designed for individuals interested in learning how to assist their families or community during emergencies.
According to the city’s announcement, the free CERT training will cover topics such as fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), wound bandaging, and treatment for burns, fractures, strains, and hypothermia. The sessions are scheduled for Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., as well as two Saturday classes on April 25 and May 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants must attend all four sessions in order to receive a certificate of completion. Those interested can register by visiting detroitmi.gov/dhsem and searching for CERT or by calling (313) 596-1742 for more information.
This initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Detroit’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to prepare citizens for potential disasters through education and hands-on training.
