Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez announced on May 1 his support for President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order that imposes sanctions on individuals responsible for repression in Cuba and those posing threats to United States national security and foreign policy.

The issue is significant because the new measures are intended to address ongoing concerns about human rights abuses and national security risks linked to the Cuban government.

Gimenez said, “The newly implemented sanctions against the Cuban regime are necessary to target its security apparatus—the machine that jails political prisoners and oppresses its people. Anyone who props up this tyranny will face serious consequences. We must end this repressive regime that continues to pose a significant threat to our national security. The days of impunity are over. Freedom and our security are not negotiable.”

Carlos Gimenez is currently serving in the U.S. Congress, representing Florida’s 28th district after replacing Debbie Mucarsel-Powell in 2021, according to Wikipedia. He has represented Florida’s 28th District since 2021, following earlier roles in the Florida House of Representatives and Miami-Dade County Commission from 2005 to 2011, as reported by his official biography. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1954, Gimenez is now aged 69 and resides in Miami, according to the Congressional Biographical Directory. He graduated from Barry University with a Bachelor of Public Administration degree in 1999.

Observers will be watching how these new sanctions affect both U.S.-Cuba relations and conditions within Cuba itself.
