The City of Rochester Hills is proud to present the 2022 Earl E. Borden Historic Preservation Leadership Award to Michael Kleiman and Madelyn Rzadkowolski for their support to preserve the Gate Lodge on the Meadow Brook Farm Estate, and the Historic Preservation Award to Vincent and Lauren Sinacola for their enhancement of the Pruitt House in Stoney Creek Village.

Kleiman, a 1983 Oakland University graduate, got involved with the Gate Lodge after seeing the deteriorating structure while golfing in 2020. He called on fellow golfers and alumni to help and received an overwhelming amount of support. Rzadkowolski, curator at Meadow Brook Hall, joined the project to provide technical support for an accurate and historically correct restoration of the building and its surroundings.

Pruitt House BeforeBuilt in 1928, the 1,100-square-foot Gate Lodge welcomed visitors to Meadow Brook Hall. Throughout the years, the lodge has housed a number of people, with its most recent resident moving out in 1997.

The renovation includes repair of the main gate, rewiring electrical, refinishing floors, replacing patio tiles, and restoring the restroom and kitchen to full functionality. All of the work was done using the same techniques and materials that were used nearly a century ago when the Lodge was originally constructed.

The Pruitt House is another gem of the Rochester Hills community with an interesting history over the last 25 years. The home at 1046 E. Tienken is in the middle of the City’s Stoney Creek Village historic district, and the Sinacolas took great care to complete the historically-appropriate renovations, making them very deserving of the award.

Pruitt House AfterThe Earl E. Borden Historic Preservation Award, created in 1989, is given to recipients who have demonstrated their love of historic heritage by restoring, preserving, and/or maintaining their properties according to the principles outlined in the U.S. Department of Interior’s standards for preservation and the City of Rochester Hills Historic Districts Ordinance.

The Historic Preservation Leadership Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding efforts to support historic preservation in our community, while the Historic Preservation Award recognizes buildings/structures that serve as outstanding examples of historic preservation, architectural integrity, and adaptive reuse.
