Three athletes from the Northern Michigan Wildcats Women’s Wrestling team competed at the NCAA Championships in Coralville, Iowa on Friday. Alissa Caltagirone made history for the program by securing its first-ever victory at the national event.
Caltagirone, wrestling in the 145-pound category, defeated Selina Moore of East Stroudsburg with a 12-0 technical fall in just over a minute. She was then eliminated after losing by technical fall in her next match and narrowly missed advancing further after a 4-4 decision loss in the consolation round.
Sophia Bassino competed at 160 pounds and lost both of her matches. In her first bout, she was defeated by a 12-0 technical fall. In her second match, Bassino led 9-8 late but ultimately lost by fall.
Abbie Miles represented Northern Michigan at 180 pounds. She lost her opening match by a 10-0 technical fall and was edged out in her second match with another close 4-4 decision.
