Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel highlighted the importance of National Fentanyl Awareness Day, aiming to combat the opioid epidemic, stressing the devastating impact of fentanyl on families and communities. Nessel emphasized the commitment of her department to fighting the opioid crisis and holding accountable those who exploit individuals with opioid-use disorder.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported a significant increase in the opioid death rate in the state between 2000 and 2020. This rise has resulted in substantial costs for various sectors like health care, child welfare, and criminal justice, impacting families, relationships, and communities.

Since assuming office in 2019, Attorney General Nessel has been dedicated to addressing the opioid epidemic. Notably, she launched a website devoted to opioid settlement distributions, securing over $1.6 billion for Michigan governments through settlements with various entities. These funds are allocated to the state and local governments to support opioid-use disorder treatment and remediation efforts.
